HOME OF THE UNDERDOGS

Formed in March 2023, out of James Parker’s Train & Gain Gym, in the short time we have been operating, we have established a strong presence on the local interclub scene, turning up in numbers and showing skill and sportsmanship at every opportunity. This has led to us progressing onto bigger shows with our most dedicated fighters, such as FightSeries and ISKA British Open.

We’re thrilled to have Garby, one of the best coaches in the country, as evidenced by the records of any fighter associated with him and Muay Khao Academy. Aswell as our 2 Homegrown ISKA Champion Coaches Callum & Laura who won the belts practicing our in house Cooksey’s Combat Club Striking System.

Our Juniors are actively competing for championships on a monthly basis, and we are so proud of the fight team as a whole. The Combat Club is slowly developing a reputation on the scene for showing up, and showing out with great technique, and bulletproof mentalities.

Our story is still being written, but the Combat Club is better described by the principals that we continue to build our squad on.

Mazlow’s Heirarchy of Needs is an idea within psychology, often shown as a pyramid, used to convey the idea that as a human once we have met our base needs, we have other desires that must be fulfilled in order to live a happy and healthy life. These are categorised into three groups; Basic needs, Psychological needs and Self-Fulfilment.

These can be broken down into broader subcategories, each of which we have tried to take into consideration. Basic needs such as Food, Water, Warmth and Rest are vital elements to getting the most out of your workouts and day to day life, therefore we have a hot and cold drink station and encourage healthy living between classes. Once these needs are met, the next basic needs are safety and security. We believe one of the best forms of security is the ability to be able to defend oneself confidently and competently, whilst also learning valuable de-escalation techniques to circumvent confrontation in the first place.

The Psychological needs come next, and this is where the Combat Club tends to excel. Love and Belonging is the need for community, friends and family. Often in life, searching for where we belong is an intrinsic human need, and everybody has a place within our walls. At our gym, we have a warm, welcoming family atmosphere full of people who actively want to bring more people into our crazy little family, no cliques, no politics, all for one, one for all.

The next psychological step we need to take into account is Self-Esteem. Confidence, Achievement, Respect of self and others and the need to be a unique individual all make up our self-esteem.  We have specially designed a grading curriculum to reward progression and provide a sense of accomplishment. Confidence of self is more easily found through confidence in ones abilities, and as your skillset develops, we will make sure your confidence of self grows with it. Often times people forget martial arts, involve artistry, and the finest form of artistry is self expression in my opinion. We will provide a framework that works, and allow you the freedom to tailor that towards whatever kind of fighter you see yourself as.

Self Actualization is the final step, and this is all about searching for your true potential, asking questions at every avenue, evaluating your own decisions and changing actions if we don’t like the outcome they bring. We believe by acknowledging where we feel weak, as well as acknowledging our strengths, in tandem with the realization we are all of those things at once, allows us to put our best foot forward and strive for constant improvements.

CALLUM COOKSEY

COACH CALLUM

Full Disclosure here, I am editing my own website and I am legitimately cringing through my teeth at having to write a paragraph about myself. I’m a black belt under the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association with 10 years of experience in combat sports of different varieties, who is now running my own martial arts business at the age of 27, that’s pretty cool I think? Won the Club Colours award two years running in 2023/24, and in 2024 I won the ISKA British Championship at 55KG in K1. But in reality I’m just a local lad who feels honoured to wake up each day, and represent my own brand, teaching the sport and values that realistically saved my life to a fantastic group of people I truly care about. I don’t know if I will ever be the biggest, or best martial artist or academy in the area, but what I do know is I LOVE living my dream, and regardless of any of that, if young Callum could see me now I’m sure he’d be proud.

LAURA STANICKA

COACH LAURA

Not really sure what to write here! I’m 24, I have been learning Kickboxing and Muay Thai for nearly 5 years, started just for a bit of fun and exercise but I quickly fell in love with the fight. I am currently 3-1 as an N Class fighter and an ISKA British Champion at Muay Thai. I have been given the opportunity to qualify as a Black Belt with the BMABA and start passing on my knowledge to other ladies in the city which I am super proud of. I am a big advocate for Women’s Self Defence and making women feel confident and comfortable to walk alone in the dark, to stand up for others, to feel strong and independent- knowing you can punch and kick gives you that. I love empowering ladies in my classes, I never really knew what I wanted to do in life but I think this is it.

Favourite Fighters?

Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Sean O'Malley, Rose Namajunas, Ronda Rousey, Zhang Weili, Cowboy Cerone and Georges St-Pierre are at the top of my list.

Favourite Fights?

Any fight Justin Gaethje takes part in, Justin vs Dustin stands out.
I love a good stand up scrap.

Favourite Attacks?

Probably the right hand, power punches, if it hits hard I'm a fan. But since working with Garby, I do LOVE a knee!

Favourite Animal?

I cannot choose just one!! I really do love all animals but I think Felines have my heart, I absolutely adore cats- wild and domesticated.
Fun fact: I'm a massive unicorn lover.

COACH GARBY
"CLINCH DON"

Garby is one of the best coaches in the entire country and we are SO PROUD to have him working with ourselves and our fight team. As a fighter, Garby represented Pra Chao Suua with great pride and credits Dean James and Professor Tony Myers for building him into a deadly fighter at the lower weights. As a coach, Garby is one of the most sought after minds in the UK, as evidenced by the records and accolades of the fighters he’s had a hand in over the years, including his pride and joy, his young champion sons Mikiel and Armaan. As a coach in the Combat Club, Since January 2024 he has led our coaches into victory 3 times, including for two British Title fights. His philosophy is all about handing out blessings and we can truly say, he’s a blessing to have in our room each and every time.
